Give Your Body a Boost with Crickets

These days, face masks are essential to every wardrobe, and hand sanitizer is a must-have in every pocket or purse. The days of grocery shopping without rubber gloves, sharing drinks with friends and the 5-second rule are behind us. At least for the time being. And we have to find ways to boost our immune systems, especially in the wake of COVID-19–such as having a more balanced, healthy diet.

In addition to exercise and getting enough sleep, there are a couple of nutrition tips to boosting your immune system:

  • Eat more healthy fats
  • Make sure you’re getting enough protein

And it just so happens there’s a food source that checks both of those boxes: crickets.

There are many health benefits that come with eating crickets–which are filled with micro-nutrients. But, when it comes to boosting your immune system, a cricket’s pure protein and top-dollar fats are hard to beat.

Insects are unique in their ability to turn more of their own diet into helpful, effective protein, without the unnecessary fats. Crickets are no exception here and, because of this ability, they make for a fuller, richer protein meal source, without you needing to intake excessive amounts. But, if it’s crickets cookies you might not be able to stop yourself!

“Proteins are the building blocks for all sorts of cells and tissues in the human body, and the immune system is completely included in that,” says Cynthia Li, MD, integrative and functional medicine doctor and author of Brave New Medicine. “Protein helps to form the cells that operate the immune system,” adds Isabel Smith, RD, CDN, a New York City-based registered dietitian.

Because crickets offer not only the best forms of protein, but also ample amounts, these critters are a one-stop ticket to a healthy immune system. But what about those healthy fats?

Yep, crickets have those too. Like we said, it’s a golden ticket to a better bacteria-fighting power.

Healthy fats boost your body’s immune response to pathogens by decreasing inflammation. There are plenty of animals with meat on their bones and fat on their meat, but, to fight off dangers to your body, those fats need to be healthy. Crickets only contain the unsaturated fats you actually want to be stored in your body. They are lean-mean immune powering machines.

While staying safe from germs is important, it’s equally important, perhaps now more than ever, that we keep our bodies strong and filled with nutrients from the best sources. Crickets, or cricket powder, are an easy-to-incorporate addition to your everyday meals and snacks and will do wonders for your immune system with their numerous health benefits (see our article on the Health Benefits of Eating Crickets).
